Directorate General of Taxes held the peak event of International Tax Conference 2022 at the Cakti Buddhi Bhakti Hall, DGT Head Office, Jakarta (Wednesday, 7/12).

This is the first International Tax Conference in DGT, and it is being co-hosted by the ATO and GIZ. The authors of the 35 best papers Taxation Call for Paper 2022, representatives of students and academics, and more than 300 participants in YouTube and Zoom Meetings also attended this conference.

Peni Hirjanto, Secretary of the Directorate General of Taxes, delivered a message from Suryo Suryo Utomo, Director General of Taxes, who was unable to attend. In this webinar, he hoped for constructive discussions between the government, academics, and international practitioners. "As a result, there will be many high-quality recommendations from stakeholders to the government, particularly to DGT," Peni Hirjanto said.

Yon Arsal, Ph.D., Assistant Minister for Tax Compliance, MoF Indonesia; Hector Thompson, Deputy Commissioner, International at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO); and Dr. Machfud Sidik, M.Sc., Taxation and Fiscal Policy Expert of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit will speak at the panel discussion (GIZ).

Matondang Elsa Siburian, S.S.T., Ak., M.Ec., M.A., Ph.D., Section Chief of International Tax Agreement and Cooperation II, DGT, is the moderator.

Assistant to the Minister of Finance for Tax Compliance in Indonesia Yon Arsal talks about how to adapt to global challenges in order to accelerate national economic recovery through tax reform. 

Yon Arsal stated in his presentation that Indonesia had one of the fastest recoveries among G20 and ASEAN-6 countries, with economic growth of 5.0% (yoy) in Q1-2022, 5.4% (yoy) in Q2-2022, and 5.7% in Q3-2022 (yoy). He also stated that Indonesia is currently undergoing tax reform with five pillars: organization, human resources, information technology and databases, business processes, and regulations.

Hector Thompson, Deputy Commissioner, International at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), talks about digital services, tax administration challenges, and Automatic Exchanges of Information (AEoI)

Dr. Machfud Sidik, M.Sc., will present on Taxing the Digital Economy: Addressing Challenges for Better Tax Administration and Fair Treatment of MNEs. Machfud Sidik also discusses the challenges of digital economics; the importance of domestic resource mobilization, the characterization of direct taxation of digital economy fall into three board categories: nexus, data, and characterisation; and also Significant Economic Present and Permanent Establishment.

The winners of the Taxation Call for Paper 2022 were also announced at this meeting, as follows:

Arifin Rosid's paper "Predicting Firms' Taxpaying Behavior Using Artificial Neural Networks: The Case of Indonesia" took first place.

Muhammad Dahlan's paper "Does Government Effectiveness Moderate The Relationship Between Regulatory Quality And Tax Complexity?: A Tale of A Hundred Nations" took second place.

Fajar Surya Putra and Yeni Farida's paper “Correction of Domestic Transfer Pricing Policy, A Zero-Sum-Game of National Tax Revenue? Case Study of KPP Pratama in the DKI Jakarta Region" took third place.

Anies Said Basalamah and Herru Widiatmanti's paper "Review of the Employee Performance Evaluation System at the Directorate General of Taxes: Its Effectiveness and Employee Satisfaction Level" took fourth place.
